The principal industry in Siuna is agriculture and livestock production. The area used for cultivating basic grains (rice, corn and beans) make up 6% of the total farming land and 50% of the total farming land is used for livestock, mostly cattle. The majority of the rural population is dedicated to the cultivation of basic grains for consumption with little or no environmentally sustainable farming practices such as soil conservation or forest preservation.
